Former Fiorentina and Juventus defender Moreno Torricelli has joined struggling Spainish club Espanyol on loan until theend of the season.

The 33-year-old Italian, who has not played since being released by Fiorentina when the Italian club went bankrupt last August, admitted he was relieved to be playing again.

“After six months without playing I am really keen to get back on the pitch again,” he told reporters during his presentation on Wednesday.

“I am verygrateful to Espanyol for this opportunity.

Espanyol coach Javier Clemente was delighted with his new signing.

“He is powerful and disciplined – a typical Italian player who will be an ideal reinforcement for our defence,” said the former Spain coach.

Espanyol remain in the relegation zone ofthe Spanish first division despite a recent good run which has seen them collect ten points from five matches.
