Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand could be fit to face Roma in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final, despite fears he had broken a bone in his foot on Sunday.

The defender limped out of their 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough but a scan has revealed nothing was broken.

Sir Alex Ferguson said Ferdinand would have a fitness test on Wednesday and if he was not fit, Gary Neville or Mikael Silvestre could deputise.

“I am hoping Rio will play,” said Ferguson.

“His scan was clear, that was the important thing. Therefore we are hoping we can get him fit to face Roma.

“We will report at 1100 on Wednesday, so he will have to do something at that time.”
