Former Russian international striker Yuri Tishkov was shot dead in central Moscow on Saturday, police have confirmed.

Tishkov, 31, was found with gunshot wounds in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“I’m shocked by the news,” executive director of the Russian Football Union Alexander Tukmanov told Ekho Moskvy radio.

“He was a good player, a good soccer commentator and wanted to make a career in soccer business. I’m really saddened by his loss.”

Tishkov was one of Russia’s most promising young strikers in the early 1990s, until a broken leg put paid to his career in 1993. Tishkov headed a well-known Moscow agency representing players and police believe his death could be linked to his business.
