Real Madrid defender Christoph Metzelder may have to undergoe surgery on his troublesome foot injury and could face up to two months on the sidelines

Coach Bernd Schuster has admitted that an operation may be the only long-term cure for Metzelder’s foot problem.

“It’s bad news. It’s a hard injury to recover from and he might need surgery. He’ll be out for between six and eight weeks,” Schuster said.

“I hope to have him back for the end of the season. It’s a shame to lose him now.”

The 27-year-old German international, who missed the 2003-04 season through injury, and has managed to make just one appearance since.
