Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane is to appear before Trafford magistrates tomorrow charged with assault and criminal damage following an alleged incident involving a teenager.

Republic of Ireland international Keane was charged yesterday by police investigating an altercation near his home in Hale, near Altrincham, earlier this month.

A police spokesman said yesterday: “Roy Keane has this afternoon been charged with a section four public order criminal damage and a section 39 assault relating to an incident that occurred in the Hale area on September 4 2004.”

The maximum sentence for common assault is six months in prison and a £5,000 fine.

A spokesman for Manchester United said: “We are not going to make any comment on the matter. It is going through due process.”

Keane played in Monday night’s victory match with Liverpool in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
