Liverpool striker Jari Litmanen is poised for a return to his former club Ajax after been deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield.

The deal with Ajax is initially for three months with a year-and-a-half extension to be considered in January, Litmanen’s agent Harri Kampman confirmed.

“This was agreed late last night,” Kampman said. “The most important thing is that Jari gets back to a familiar and safe environment, and hopefully will get playing time. The club and the player know each other perfectly.’

Litmanen been a peripheral figure at Anfield, starting only 12 league games for the club since joining them from Barcelona on a free transfer in January 2001.

The 31-year-old was a European Cup winner in his previous spell with Ajax before moving to Barcelona in 1999.
