Lucas Neill has turned down an offer from from Liverpool and agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with Premiership strugglers West Ham.

The Australian defender was expected to move to Liverpool, but the Merseyside club were unwilling to match O’Neill’s wage demands and the deal fell through.

Meanwhile, Hammers’ boss, Alan Curbishley, is desperate to strengthen his team for their relegation battle, offered Neill a deal reputed to be worth £60,000.

“Lucas has agreed terms on a two-and-a-half year deal with West Ham and is looking forward to the challenge ahead,” Neill’s agent Peter Harrison is quoted in The Times.
