Osasuna have denied claims by Newcastle boss Graeme Souness that they attempted to sign Patrick Kluivert during the January transfer window.

Souness claimed yesterday that he had turned down an approach from the Spanish club for the Dutch striker.

Kluivert has struggled make an impact on Tyneside since his arrival from Barcelona last summmer, but Souness believes the Dutch striker still has a role to play at St James Park.

Souness stated yetserday that he rejected a bid for the former Ajax striker, a claim denied by the Spanish club.

The club issued a statement clarifying their position.

“Club Atletico Osasuna want to firmly deny the declarations from Newcastle manager Graeme Souness in which he stated an interest from Osasuna in signing Patrick Kluivert,” it read.

“It is not true and could give a negative image to our supporters.”
