Michael Owen has threatened to quit Liverpool if they fail to reach the Champions League next season.

Asked about Owen’s position at Liverpool, the player’s agent, Jon Holmes, stressed the importance of playing in Europe’s elite competition.

“Champions League football is very important to Michael Owen,’ said Holmes.

“For Liverpool not to qualify for the Champions League two years on the trot would have severe repercussions.”

“Michael Owen is now 24. He’s moving into his prime and needs to be playing football at the very highest level.”

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has always maintained that Owen would sign a new deal at Liverpool.
