Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as the new coach of Parma.

The former Chelsea and Valencia boss returns to management with a team struggling against relegation from Serie A.

The 3-0 defeat by Roma at the weekend leaves them firmly in relegation trouble three points adrift of safety after having picked up just 15 points from 22 matches this season.

His first game in charge will be the UEFA Cup match at Braga on Thursday.

Sunday’s defeat proved to be the final straw for owner Tommaso Ghirardi who fired coach Stefano Pioli on Monday.

Ranieri has been away from Italian football for a decade, having enjoyed spells with Chelsea and Valencia.

Ranieri, who numbers Cagliari, Napoli and Fiorentina among his former clubs in Italy, has been out of management leaving Valencia in 2005.
