Real Madrid have won the World Club Cup for the third time after a 2-0 victory over South American champions Olimipia in Yokohama.

Ronaldo, back in Japan, the country that witnessed his rebirth as a world class footballer in the summer, gave the European champions the lead on 15 minutes and Guti added a second six minutes from time.

Ronaldo’s opener was reminiscent of his second goal in the World Cup finals. Roberto Carlos powered down the left flank and his cross was dummied by Raul into the path of Ronaldo, who evaded the attentions of Nelson Zelaya, before calmly slotting the ball home.

Olimpia almost managed an immediate ripostewhen Hernan Lopez’s shot rebounded off the post to safety.

Midway through the half, Zidane almost extended Real’s lead when hecollected a neat pass from Ronaldo only to blaze wide with the goal at his mercy. At the other end, Olimpia had the chance to draw level six minutes before the break when Benitez’s goalbound shot saved by Casillas.

After the break, Ronaldo was close to a second goal on 53 minutes, but he screwed his shot wide of the post. Shortly afterwards, from an inviting Luis Figo corner, both Raul and Ronaldo were inches away from making contact with the goal at their mercy.

In an open game, there were chances for both sides and the respective keepers Casillas and Tavarellihad to be at their best to deny efforts from Benitez and Luis Figo respectively.

As the game wore on though, Vicente del Bosque’s Madrid team began to take command and it came as no surprise when they sealed their win with a second goal. Guti, on as a substitute for Ronaldo, was on hand too head home a Luis Figo cross.
