Officials from Everton were expected to meet police today to discuss allegations that Wayne Rooney spat at Liverpool fans during Staurday’s Merseyside derby match.

The 17-year-old England striker is alleged to have spat in the direction of Liverpool fans who were taunting him during Saturday’s game.

Merseyside Police has confirmed an inquiry has begun into the incident.

A police spokeswoman said: “Merseyside police are aware of an incident involving Wayne Rooney at the local derby match.

“Sufficient people came forward to report the incident and there is no further requirement for witnesses.

“We will be following up inquiries as soon as possible and will be liaising with the clubs.”

Everton’s head of corporate affairs and public relations Ian Ross said: “We will speak with Merseyside Police within the next 24 hours.”
