Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at Highbury until summer 2003.

News of Seaman’s decision was confirmed by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. “David has extended his contract for one year. That’s official – it was signed last night.”

“He will come back strong and determined, like he always has been when he’s had a blow,’ added Wenger. “It was a big disappointment for him at the World Cup, but he’s really determined to come back and keep going.

“I personally hope he will not give up his international career – and that he will keep fighting for his place in the England team.”

The 38-year-old had contemplated retirement after admitting responsibility for the goal that knockedEngland out of the World Cup, but messages of support from the public convinced him to continue playing.
