UEFA has lodged an appeal against its own disciplinary body over the one-match ban given to Manchester United captain Roy Keane.

Keane was found guilty of improper conduct for standing on Porto keeper Vitor Baia. The one match ban rules him out of tonight’s return match at Old Trafford.

But UEFA now wants Keane’s challenge to be regarded as assault, which would result in at least a three-match ban.

Any extended suspension would rule Keane out of the quarter-finals and beyond should United overcome Porto. United trail the Portuguese champions 2-1 from the first leg.
