Liverpool defender Gregory Vignal has joined Rangers on a year long loan.

Vignal, another of Gerard Houllier’s nearly men, joined Liverpool 2000 from Montpellier, aged just 19. After initially starting well at Anfield, Vignal suffered a loss in form, before injury further hampered his chances of making an impact.

Since then, he was loaned to French clubs Bastia, Rennes, and then Espanyol in Spain.

The highlight of his Anfield career was being a part of the squad that won the treble in 2000/01.

Vignal will be an ideal replacement at Ibrox for Michael Ball, who is not expected to play next season because Rangers cannot afford to pay his former club Everton the latest instalment of his transfer fee.

Rangers director of football Martin Bain said: “Discussions were completed last night and I can confirm that Gregory has signed and will join us on a one-year loan deal.”

Vignal had previously impressed in friendly games against Spurs, Fulham and Newcastle.
