Wigan manager Chris Hutchings has confirmed that the club have turned down an offer from Everton for Leighton Baines.

The England Under-21 defender turned down a move to Sunderland earlier this month after Wigan accepted their £6million offer for the player and Hutchings hopes Baines now decides to stay at the JJB Stadium.

“We turned down a bid from Everton of £4million and a player, who they rate at around £2million,” Hutchings told BBC Radio Five Live.

“I have a very good relationship with Leighton and we’d like him to stay but we can’t stop speculation or other clubs making offers.”

Hutchings also confirmed that Wigan would be looking for a similar fee to the one agreed with Sunderland if Baines was to leave the club.

“It wouldn’t be very good for business if we took less than that, so we’ll be looking for that.”
