Arsene Wenger has confirmed veteran goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will sign a contract to rejoin Arsenal until the end of the season.

Arsenal have been looking to bring in short-term cover since Wojicech Szczesny suffered a finger injury in the defeat by Barcelona last week.

With Lukasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone also on the sidelines that left Manuel Almunia as the only senior goalkeeper in Wenger’s squad.

Lehmann confirmed earlier in the week that he would be happy to rejoin Arsenal and a deal is now close to completion.

Wenger said: “Lehmann is training with us and will sign for the rest of the season.

“We have no cover in the Premier League, so that is why I decided to bring Jens back.

“He has not signed, but it [a contract] has been agreed.”

The 41-year-old spent five years with Arsenal and made almost 200 appearances for the club after his 2003 arrival from Borussia Dortmund. He was a member of the Invincible team that went through the 2003-04 league season undefeated.

He returned to the Bundesliga with Stuttgart in 2008 before the former Germany international hung up his gloves last summer.
