Group C
Werder Bremen 0-2 Barcelona

A beguiling Barcelona side grabbed all three points in their opening Group C encounter last night, despite the stubborn resistance put up by their hosts.

Deco scored the Catalan’s first after 13 minutes. After an undulating run down the left flank, full back Giovanni Van Bronkhurst crossed to Ronaldinho who, in a clever passage of play, flicked the ball onto Eto’o who found the Portuguese midfielder Deco waiting to pounce with a fierce first time shot.

And provider nearly turned scorer five minutes later when the Dutchman met Xavi’s in swinging corner, but his sweetly struck volley went the wrong side of the post.

Thereafter, it was all Bremen up until the interval, with Klasnic, Frings and Naldo all going close.

After the break, Barcelona assumed the initiative, with Deco squandering two opportunities to double his, and Barca’s, tally. The result was made academic in the 72nd minute however when Ronaldinho scored from the penalty spot after substitute Lionel Messi was adjudged to have been impeded by Christian Schultz.
