Byron Moreno, most controversial of the referees at the 2002 World Cup finals, is ready to make a comeback.

Moreno is currently under suspension after his controversial handling of a top domestic league game between LDU Quito and Barcelona Guayaquil. That topped off World Cup controversy where he was in charge of Italy’s golden goal second round defeat by co-hosts South Korea.

It had been thought Moreno would quit refereeing altogether if he were successful in Quito in last weekend’s local government elections. Instead he lost and has told friends he will concentrate now on returning to refereeing.
