Newcastle striker Michael Owen had seen his surgery delayed until the swelling around his affected knee goes down.
Owen underwent an operation to repair cartilage damage, and is scheduled for further treatment in September. However, before undergoing surgery again, he must wait for the swelling on his knee to recede.
“I have to make sure the knee is in a fit state and the swelling is down,” Owen told The Sun.
“That way I give myself the best chance of having the cruciate operation.”
Owen has been operated on by American knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman in Colorado.
“The plan is to go back out there in six or seven weeks – hopefully, that will be the last I see of America,” he said.
“Maybe then there will be light at the end of the tunnel and I can head for a comeback.”
Owen, who missed large periods of last season through a variety of injuries, collected his latest knock during England’s World Cup match with Sweden. The striker faces missing most of next season with the new injury.
