Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur today denied any interest in signing Portuguese star Nuno Gomes.

Since Gomes’ club, Fiorentina were relegated from Serie A, a move away from the cash-strapped side has looked likely for the striker. The Italian side are prepared to let the player go for a cut-price fee and Spurs were the favourites to sign Gomes but Director of Football at the club, David Pleat, denied any such talk.

Pleat also revealed to the club website that new Middlesbrough striker, Massimo Maccarone was originally offered to the London side, but manager Glenn Hoddle was not interested.

He claims the 22-year-old, who moved from Serie B outfit, Empoli to Middlesbrough for £8 million, wanted a move to the capital.

“Maccarone was offered to most of the London clubs because that is really where he wanted to go. However, he was not a player that Glenn Hoddle wanted to pursue,” Pleat told the club’s website.
