Steaua Bucharest have sacked Italian coach Walter Zenga after a string of poor results, the club’s owner said.

Steaua lost 1-0 on Wednesday against National Bucharest and they have taken only seven points from their last six matches and are now one point ahead of arch-rivals Dinamo Bucharest with three matches remaining.

“Zenga is the man responsible for the team’s poor play recently,” owner Gigi Becali said.

“Steaua might lose the title and Zenga must pay for that.

“The team needed a shock in order to wake up.”

Dorinel Munteanu and Dumitru Dumitriu will take over as caretaker coaches.

After Wednesday’s match against National, several hundred angry fans gathered at the club’s headquarters to protest about the state of the club.
