Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said he was delighted with the performance of his players after they inflicted the first defeat of the season on Serie A leaders Roma.

Two goals from striker Andriy Shevchenko gave Milan a 2-1 victory in Rome, lifted Milan level with second-placed Juventus on 33 points, three points behind Roma but with a game in hand.

“We controlled the midfield, had better possession and so created more chances for Shevchenko. It was exactly what I wanted,” Ancelotti said.

“Milan don’t have to prove anything to anybody, but tonight showed that no team has an advantage in the race for the title and that any team is capable of recovering from a setback,” said Shevchenko.

Roma coach Fabio Capello was disappointed with his side’s display.

“It wasn’t the usual Roma. We never really got stuck in,” Capello said.

“Normally we have speed and continuity. This time we absolutely deserved what was coming to us.”
