Brazilian striker Ailton is to leave Germany’s Schalke for Turkish side Besiktas after one season at the Bundesliga club.

“Both teams have agreed. Nothing has been signed yet but it looks as if Toni [Ailton] will move to Istanbul,” Schalke general manager Andreas Muller said.

Ailton was Schalke’s top Bundesliga scorer with 14 goals last season, well short of the 28 he netted for Werder Bremen in their League and Cup double-winning season in 2003-2004.

Besiktas have offered 3.5 million euros (£2.5m) for the player, according to media reports.

“It is a good deal for everyone,” 32-year-old Ailton said.

Schalke, who finished second behind Bayern Munich in last season’s Bundesliga, have already signed Germany striker Kevin Kuranyi from Stuttgart but have sold Mike Hanke to Wolfsburg. Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick said he would like to see the money earned from Ailton’s departure reinvested in a player of similar quality.
