Empoli have rewarded coach Luigi Cagni with a new contract after he preserved the club’s Serie A status.

The 55-year-old Cagni replaced the Mario Somma who was sacked in January and was given the task of avoiding the drop.

Cagni delivered an upturn in form that has brought 19 points from the last eight games, and taken the club to eleventh in Serrie A. He has been awarded a new contract which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2007.

Cagni had previously coached in Serie A at Piacenza and Verona.
