Real Madrid coach Wanderlei Luxemburgo is without the injured Ronaldo and Míchel Salgado for the visit of Rosenborg.

With Sergio Ramos suspended, Jonathan Woodgate could get the nod to play alongside Iván Helguera.

Woodgate’s unlucky start to his career in Madrid was not helped by a sending-off and an own goal on his debut.

“We’ll be marking him tightly tomorrow!” the Brazilian joked. “But he’s a quality player and he will have the chance to demonstrate his pedigree and regain his place in the England squad. The defence does not concern just the back four though – the whole team makes a contribution.”

Julio César Baptista, Robinho and Raúl will form Madrid’s attack in the absence of Ronaldo.

“We must put faith in the players we have at hand – Baptista is a different player to Ronaldo but he’s just as important,” Luxemburgo said.

Meanwhile Rosenborg coach Per-Mathias Hogmo has said he would be happy with a draw in the Bernabeu.

“We’re up against a great team that’s characterised by individual flair,” he said.

“We will have to see if Madrid channel this into being a collective unit on Wednesday, as sometimes they vary their game. My players are in good spirits and believe victory is possible, although we know it is going to be difficult.”

Rosenborg are without defenders Robbie Russell and Miika Koppinen while goalkeeper Espen Johnsen and midfielder Orjan Berg are doubts.

“It’s always a challenge to take on a side that is constantly changing its game and who are strong in every position,” Hogmo added.

“We will try to match them man for man and try to unbalance them in the knowledge that both individually and as a team, this is a huge undertaking for us.”
