All to play for in Group C as both Werder Bremen and vistors Panathinaikos are in with a chance of maintaining their involvement in European football.

Bremen must win and hope Barcelona beat Udinese in order to make the last 16, while Panathinaikos have a chance of earning a place in the UEFA Cup.

Werder striker Ivan Klasnic is unavailable, so coach Thomas Schaaf will be relieved to welcome back Miroslav Klose from injury. The German international will be partnered by Nelson Valdez.

Even though a win is required, Schaaf acknowledges that his team should not adopt a gung ho approach tonight.

“We are strong at the Weserstadion and will look to display our attacking qualities,” he said, “but not at the cost of our defence.

“The key will be finding the right balance between defence and attack.”

Visiting coach Alberto Malesani is looking for a boost from Europe following a poor run domestically.

“I’m an optimistic person,” said Malesani. “I’m convinced we can show another side to our game in Bremen and enjoy more success than we have of late.”

“I expect a very aggressive and offensive Bremen side. We’ll be prepared for that and wait for the chance to counterattack.”
