Espanyol’s Ivan de la Pena is to undergo surgery on his leg as he looks to perpetuate his career.

The former Barcelona midfielder has been struggling with the problem this season, restricting him to only six appearances in the first team.

De la Pena says he has no choice but to undergo surgery, which will mean up to three months on the sidelines.

“We’ve tried everything to avoid surgery but it has been no good,” said De la Pena.

“Going under the knife is the only remaining solution to see whether I’ll be able to compete again.”
