Reports in Spain say Iker Caasillas has been dropped by Real Madrid and was informed of the decision after training on Monday.

Casillas has been booed by a section of the Madrid support lately and coach Carlo Ancelotti has told his squad that he wants to implement a rotation policy in the coming weeks, with Casillas being one of those to make way against Elche.

After rotating his goalkeepers last season with Casillas sharing duties with Diego Lopez, the Italian announced last month he would be selecting a single starter for both La Liga and Champions League games this year. Yet his decision comes just two days after President Florentino Perez defended the Real Madrid captain at the club’s general assembly.

“Iker Casillas deserves our respect. He’s the best goalkeeper in the club’s history and does not deserve the whistles he has received.

“We must unite to protect each other. Our strength lies in unity,” declared Perez.

Keylor Navas will replace Casillas for Tuesday’s league game against Elche.
