Independiente are new leaders in the Argentine apertura championship after thrashing Colon 7-1.
The former South American champions are one point ahead of Cesar Menotti’s Rosario Central who slipped up when they were held 1-1 at home by Velez Sarsfield.
Two points further adrift are River Plate (held goalless at Arsenal), Boca Juniors (2-0 winners over Gimnasia y Esgrima) and Newell’s Old Boys (2-1winners away to Nuevo Chicago).
Independiente’s Andres Silvera, with six goals, is now the league’s top scorer.
