Former Italy coach Cesare Maldini has spoken against the possible return of Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta to the national team.
The Roma captain revealed he would consider a to return to the national side and there has also been talk about a Nesta comeback.
While the news has gained support from a number of observers, Maldini believes that those players who left the squad should not reverse their decisions.
“It’s not acceptable if you make a U-turn on decisions regarding Italy,” Maldini told Radio Kiss Kiss.
“Totti to the World Cup? When a player says enough is enough to the national team then that should remain the decision. I don’t like the fact that he and Nesta want to come back.
“I had Totti at the Under-21 level and I wouldn’t be able to say if I would take him or not.”
Maldini sympathises with Lippi over the pressure from those who call for players to be included.
“It’s always a torment if you are the Italy coach. With me it was with Roberto Baggio in 1998.”
