Liverpool might be the favourites to win Group D, but they face a tricky opening Champion League game at French side Marseille.

Manchester City have confirmed that they are not interested in signing Brazilian striker Ronaldo.

The three-time World Footballer of the Year is currently back in his homeland recovering from a knee injury suffered in February while playing for Milan.

He is a free agent after being released by the Serie A outfit and would be able to sign for City outside of the transfer window.

Ronaldo has claimed he has received an offer from the Premier League side.

The Brazilian had been quoted as saying: “I like the project that Manchester City have presented me. They want to make the club one of the best in the world and I feel that I can help. It is the best offer I’ve received and it will be very interesting to play with Robinho. Me and him, together, we can score more than 50 goals.”

However, City have confirmed that although they made an initial approach to Ronaldo, they would not be pursuing their interest.

“We had shown a past interest in bringing the player to the football club in the right circumstances and spoke to him and his representatives,” admitted a club spokesperson.

“However, we have chosen not to pursue the matter.”

It is understood that City met with Ronaldo and carried out medical checks on the forward before deciding against a deal.
