Italy’s World Cup-winning defender Marco Materazzi has signed a new four-year deal with Inter.

Materazzi was the man at the centre of Zinedine Zidane’s sending off in the World Cup final between France and Italy – when he was headbutted by the Frenchman.

He will line up alongside new French team-mate Patrick Vieira next season, but Vieira does not anticipate any problems.

“There won’t be any problems, I will pay him my compliments,” said Vieira, who signed from Juventus on Wednesday.

“We French are still a little shocked but in Italy you need to talk more about the World Cup win rather than insisting on the Zidane headbutt.”

Materazzi was suspended for two internationals and fined £2,170 for provoking Zidane.
