Franco Sensi, the president of Serie A club Roma, has died at the age of 82.

Sensi, who had been club president since 1993, had been ill for some time and had effectively ceded control of the club to his daughter Rosella, Roma’s chief executive.

In recent months, there has been growing speculation that the Sensi family were looking to sell Roma in order to alleviate the problems facing their company Italpetroli, which is £300million in debt.

American financier George Soros expressed interest in buying the club, but grew frustrated at what he saw as attempts by the Sensi family to push up the asking price.
