Salamanca midfielder Miguel Garcia is recovering in hospital after suffering a heart attack during his side’s second division match versus Real Betis on Sunday afternoon.

The 31-year-old collapsed on the pitch after 61 minutes of play, and the medical team that attended to him were forced to revive him on the field before the emergency services arrived. It took the doctors on the pitch more than five minutes to bring him back to consciousness.

Thankfully, Garcia is now in a stable condition in hospital, as further tests are undertaken to determine his overall health.

The Garcia incident comes in the wake of the fatal heart attacks suffered by Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta and Espanyol’s Daniel Jarque, while Real Madrid midfielder Ruben de la Red, along with current Sevilla defender Sergio Sanchez, were struck down in similar circumstances, and have yet to return to action.

Salamanca chief medic, Dr. Garrett, said: “When you find a person in this state for so long, it is the worst thing that can happen to you in this life and in this profession, but it is one that we have studied and it needs to be addressed.”
