Real Madrid’s new coach Bernd Schuster has warned fans that success might not be immediate and called for patience as he looks forward to his first season in charge at the Bernabeu.

“It will be difficult to produce the kind of football I’d like to see this year with this team,” Schuster told El Pais.

“We are going to reach a high level. It will be very hard to reach the summit, which is what I am aiming at, but we are going to get to a good level – even if that risks taking time as I have realised we had to change many things in the players’ mentality.”

Real have had a disappointing close-season culminating in last weekend’s Spanish SuperCup defeat to Seville.

El Pais estimates the club has spent €118m in the summer on new players, including Dutch winger Arjen Robben from Chelsea, Argentinian fulll-back Gabriel Heinze, German international defender Christoph Metzelder from Dortmund and Javier Saviola from Barcelona.
