European champions Man Utd get their Champions League defence started with a home tie against Villarreal this Wednesday.

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has launched a stinging attack on Robinho following his decision to join Manchester City.

Robinho left the Spanish capital for City in a shock move on transfer deadline day after being courted by Chelsea all summer.

The Brazilian demanded a move away from Real after Chelsea submitted a bid for his services earlier in the summer, but Real were reluctant to sell.

However, they accepted a British record fee of £32.5million from City on deadline day after Chelsea refused to meet Real’s asking price.

Schuster has questioned Robinho’s ambition, describing the Eastlands outfit as a “mediocre” club.

“From a sports point of view, for me it is a disappointment because Robinho had everything here to triumph,” Schuster told tv channel Cuatro Spain.

“But you have to respect his dream to be a good player in a mediocre club in England.

“Robinho was an important player and I wanted him to stay but that was impossible because the kid did not want to be with us.”
