Francesco Totti has hit back at Lazio rival Paolo Di Canio after the former West Ham striker questioned the Roma captain’s loyalty to his current club.

“The ‘symbol’ says he will only stay if you build a team,” said Di Canio.

“I think this annoys Roma’s supporters.

“When I joined Lazio I paid to come here, but I earned happiness.

“I never made demands because to play in Lazio’s jersey is the best of life.

“If Lazio were relegated or went bankrupt for me it would remain a beautiful thing.

“For someone else – evidently – the team is not so important.”

Totti has now responded with a cutting remark about Di Canio’s move to Juventus from Lazio in 1990.

“Di Canio? He talks of flags, but wasn’t he the person who said ‘better being a Juve pennant than a Lazio flag’?” said Totti.

Totti’s remarks come on the eve of Thursday’s Rome derby encounter.
