The brother of former Brazil striker Edmundo has been shot dead in Rio de Janeiro.

The tragedy will add to the legend of controversy surrounding the player who is currently in Japan under contract to Verdy in the J.League.

The body of his brother, Luis Carlos Alves de Souza, aged 28, was found at the wheel of his car in Rio on Sunday night. His death was ascribed to gang unrest since he had been linked with a drugs and theft ring.

Edmundo was unable to catch a flight in time to return to Rio for the funeral.

Nicknamed the ‘Animal’ his talent for goals was matched by his talent for controversy. He squabbled with coaches, directors and team-mates at many of his clubs which included Vasco da Gama, Palmeiras, Flamengo, Corinthians, Santos and Fiorentina and Napoli in Italy.
