Giovanni Trapatton. who has been linked with the vacant managerial position at Leeds United, has insisted that he wants to stay in charge of the Italian national side.

“I have probably made several mistakes, but it’s not in my nature to quit,” said Trapattoni, whose side were were knocked out of the World Cup at the second round stage by South Korea.

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale had earlier refused to disclose details about the search for a replacement for David O’Leary but there has been growing speculation linking Trapattoni with the post.

President of the Italian Football Federation, Franco Carraro, has given Trapattoni hisbacking by saying the manager will “stay in place.”
