Marc Wilmots has been given the all-clear to resume training and his Bundesliga career with Schalke.

The Belgian World Cup midfielder has feared possibly having to end his playing career prematurely after aggrating knee trouble. X-rays and scans now shown a ‘simple’ strain rather than major cartilage and ligament damage.

Wilmots said: “It was a big worry for me. At least I’m grateful the club and medical staff took every possible precaution. That gives me a lot of confidence. Now all I have to do is phase myself back into training and regain match fitness.”
