Inter skipper Javier Zanetti has offered his backing to under-fire coach Hector Cuper, following Tuesday’s Champions League exit at the hands of arch-rivals Milan.

“With Cuper we’ve been at the top for two years,’ Zanetti told Inter’s official website.

‘He’s a great coach who’s doing an excellent job. We have the will, enthusiasm and confidence to carry on together next year.

“The club has made a great effort in putting together this great squad. We need to understand that in certain moments we need to give more.”

Although Inter missed out on the Serie A title, Zanetti says the players are desperate to secure the runners-up spot, to enable them to avoid playing in the qualifying round of next season’s Champions League.

“The disappointment will become rage and the desire to win the last two matches. To finish second means laying the foundations for a successful season next year,’ the Argentinian added.

‘Without the Champions League preliminaries a team is fresher and has greater resources in the final part of the season.”
