Roma president Franco Sensi and Brazil skipper Cafu have been provisionally cleared of charges of passport fraud.
Sensi, Cafu, the Argentine player Gustavo Javier Bartelt and nine other people have all had their cases halted by Rome magistrate Claudio Tortora.
All had been accused of conspiring to provide false information which assisted the players in obtaining Italian and thus European Union citizenship.
The Italian prosecutor’s office and legal affairs minister Siviero Piro still have a right of appeal in the cases of Sensi, Cafu, Bartelt, Regina Feliciano (Cafu’s wife), Cristoforo Colombo (agent), Rosangela Monteiro (Roma employee), Andrea Meloni(former Italian consul in Buenos Aires), Sergio Garulli, Francesco Felice Gentile, Giuseppe Lucisano and Sergio Meatta (Rome corporation officials) and Morano Calabro (Cosenza council officer).
They were accused with reference to the documentation provided concerning Domenico Vicente, Joao and Ana Mauro, parents and grandparents of Ms Feliciano.
The prosecutor had claimed that the Domenico Vicente for whom documentation was provided was not the claimed Italian citizen Domenico Vincenzo Mauro. Similar allegations were laid against Bartelt, concerning the identity of his mother.
