The drought is officially over. Cristiano Ronaldo, who had seen his huge lead in the ESM Golden Shoe rankings overturned by great rival Lionel Messi, returned to the top of the standings with a bang.

Five goals in Real Madrid’s 9-1 win over Granada at the weekend – the first time he has achieved such a feat in his illustrious career – have taken the Portuguese striker to 36 goals for the season, four ahead of Messi who recorded a rare blank in Barcelona’s 1-0 win at Celta Vigo.

The leading pair are well clear of Chelsea’s Diego Costa and Tottenham’s Harry Kane who sit in joint third place.

Alexandre Lacazette, whose goals have powered Lyon’s title charge in France, was again on target. The French striker scored in his side’s 3-1 win over Guingamp to take his tally to an impressive 24 for the season.

Elsewhere in the top ten, there were two new entries, Juventus’ Carlos Tevez and Sevilla’s Carlos Bacca, both of whom scored at the weekend.

Rules

Only the leading five countries – Spain, Italy, Germany, England and Portugal – in the UEFA rankings have two as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between clubs from those countries and those of other nations.A player cannot play first in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points totals for each season.
