Basle overcame Spartak Moscow 2-0 in the clubs’ rearranged Champions League clash in Moscow, to increase the pressure on Liverpool in the battle for second place in Group B.

The result means that Basle move into second place in the group behind Valencia and a draw next week against Liverpool will ensure a place in the second phase for Christian Gross’s side.

The game was postponed last week as a mark of respect for the people who died when more than 100 people died after Russian troops stormed a theatre held by Chechen guerillas.

Hernan Rossi silenced the home supporters when he put Basle ahead in on 17 minutes. Christian Giminez, sealed Basle’s victory soil with a second goal a minute from time.

‘We played very well today and deserved to win,’ said Gross afterwards.

‘I usually don’t like to make predictions but I think we have a very good chance of making the second round of the Champions League.’
