Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has admitted that he was disappointed and embarrassed by his team’s performances in this season’s Champions League.

‘The way we’ve played in the Champions League this season has been disappointing and embarrassing,’ Hitzfeld said after his side’s 2-1 defeat to Deportivo Coruna, a defeat which ended Bayern’s slim hopes of progressing to the next stage.

‘We’ve caused great damage to Bayern Munich with the way we’ve presented ourselves in this competition.’

Hitzfeld accused some of his players of arrogance and hinted that he would be looking to sell those players who were unable to cope with the pressures of Champions League football.

‘In the first game against Deportivo Coruna we were guilty of arrogance,’ Hitzfeld said.

‘For some of the players, the pressure has been too much. They haven’t been able to handle it. I’ll have to think about some of the players.

‘For me personally, this has been one of the most difficult moments of my career.’
