Real Madrid assistant sporting director Emilio Butragueno has spoken out in defence of Michael Owen and insists the England striker will eventually make his mark at the club.

The former Liverpool striker has struggled since arriving in Madrid, unable to oust first choice strikers Raul and Ronaldo and looking hesitant in his brief appearances to date.

But Butragueno, a prolific striker at the club, is confident Owen will find his feet.

“This is his first season, he has only just arrived and he is still settling in,” Butragueno stated.

“Every player needs a period of adaptation and the same thing is happening to Owen.

“We must remember that people also questioned the signings of Zidane and Ronaldo.

“They said they weren’t performing as was hoped and it was because they needed time to settle in.

“It is the same for Owen I have no doubt that he will bring positive things to the club, above all because he is a good player.”
