Chelsea 1-0 Anderlecht

In an efficient, perfunctory performance, Chelsea beat a dogged Anderlecht side by a single goal, ensuring that their Champions League campaign got off to a victorious start.

Frank Lampard scored the only goal of the game – his 3rd of the season so far – after being teed up by Robben from an indirect free kick on 19 minutes. The Dutchman could have scored himself earlier on in the game, but his low shot was saved by Zitka, as was Essien’s rebound.

Anderlecht had a chance to equalize in the second half, but Anthony Vanden Borre’s deflected shot ricocheted off the left hand post after being keeper Peter Cech. It would prove to be their only real opening.

The win means that, thus far this season, Chelsea have yet to drop a single point or concede a single goal in any of their domestic and European games.
