Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been arrested on suspicion of assault at a London nightclub.

The 39-year-old was held in South Kensington, west London, in the early hours after the alleged incident in which a 43-year-old man claimed he had been assaulted.

A spokeswoman for London’s Metropolitan Police: “Police were called at approximately 0340 GMT by a 43-year-old man who alleged that he had been assaulted by another man at a club in South Kensington.

“Following inquiries, a 39-year-old man was arrested at a separate club nearby at 0415 GMT on suspicion of actual bodily harm and is currently in custody at a south-west London police station.”

The 57-times capped Gascoigne, who played for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers and Everton, has struggled to get into management in recent years.
