Jean-Jacques Eydelie, one of the ‘villains’ of the Marseille match-fixing scandal, has just signed for a new club.

Eydelie, 36-year-old defender, has joined minor league Beaucairois on a short-term contract.

He was suspended for 18 months for his part in the Marseille scandal.

Eydelie had been among a group of players who agreed to fix a crucial league match against Valenciennes. The match ended in a draw which helped Valenciennes’ fight against relegation but also assured Marseille of the French league title just four days ahead of their Champions Cup Final against Milan – which they won 1-0 in Munich.

Marseille were subsequently stripped of the French league crown and relegated to the second division as punishment. Owner and president Bernard Tapie was later jailed for masterminding Marseille’s match-fixing schemes.
